Launch of the 2021 Annual Report of the Council of Europe Platform to Promote the Protection of Journalism and Safety of Journalists

Tomorrow, 28 April 2021, to launch its annual report, the Council of Europe Platform to Promote the Protection of Journalism and Safety of Journalists is organising a panel discussion of the Report’s findings and recommendations for actions, featuring: 
- Sarah Clarke, Head of Europe and Central Asia, Article19
- Scott Griffen, Deputy Director of International Press Institute
- Ricardo Gutiérrez, General Secretary of European Federation of Journalists
- William Horsley, Media Freedom Representative at the Association of European Journalists
- Moderator: Tom Gibson, EU Representative at the Committee to Protect Journalists

In the past year, extraordinary damage was inflicted on media freedom and the safety of journalists across much of the Council of Europe region. The Annual Report covers key developments on topics such as physical attacks, (online-) harassment and intimidation, legal threats such as abusive litigation including SLAPPs, the impact of governments’ COVID-19 responses and the fight against impunity. The analysis of the platform’s monitoring is complemented by concrete recommendations for actions for the Council of Europe and its member states.
