European Commission replies to open letter regarding SLAPPs
[vc_row][vc_column width="2/3"][vc_column_text]In May 2020, a group of twenty-six NGOs sent an open letter to the European Commission. The letter raised concerns about Strategic Lawsuits Against Public Participation (SLAPPs) and offered suggestions for EU action.
Now, the Directorate-General Justice and Consumers of the European Commission sent a reply, acknowledging the problems and outlining the Commission's actions on it.
The actions include:
- conducting a mapping of the possible situations of abuse of litigation against journalists,
- evaluation of the Brussels I Recast Regulation, on jurisdiction and recognition and enforcement of judgments, and the Rome II Regulation
- a study on the application of the Rome II Regulation
- improving the resilience of the EU's democracies through the European Democracy Action Plan.
